Intuition often fails us, especially when coupled with ignorance, or when we take our experience to be representative of all experience. This isn't a knock against his essays, or even essays generally, but his writing is so frequently about topics where actual representation of his subject can add meaning that even his imagery simply can't. The Comforts of Cyberpunk (I don't necessarily like cyberpunk, but Puschak's reasoning is what got me agreeing with him.

A conversion from video essays to actual written essays was a natural leap for him to make and it's exactly what he did with his ever sharp and utterly personal debut collection Escape Into Meaning. Puschak reads like a young Oliver Sacks at times -- no small compliment -- and his reflections can be similarly elegant and masterly.Otherwise, it will gradually get pulled into the quicksand of my consciousness, forgotten or folded into a mix of ill-considered motivations. Now, in his debut essay collection, “Escape Into Meaning,” he attempts to translate his signature style into the written word. It captures that occasional experience we all have of waking up into our own lives , not quite knowing how we got here or where we’re going. I've never felt so right, so welcomed and capable than after reading this first essay and I really want everyone to enjoy something similarly. If you don't, you'll probably wish the author's lengthy college reminiscence stayed out of the Emerson break-down.

It lay long neglected, until, after many years, when I was newly escaped from college, I read the book, and procured the remaining volumes. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. I find that once I articulate something in speech, it sticks in my mind more or less intact—but only for a little while.
